LONG TIME NO SEE
It was the last year in August when David left for Bridgeport. Since then many things happened in Kate’s life. She was still happily living above the pizzeria, but in April Lia’s son decided to move out of the town with his family and he asked his mother’s boyfriend, Luis, to move away with them. At first, it looked like that Luis would stay in Monte Vista, but at the end, he decided to join them. One day, Luis told Kate that he’s going to sell the restaurant. Fortunately for Kate, she could live there until the day when someone would buy it. Kate was really happy that Luis didn’t ask her to move out immediately, but since she’s gotten to know this news, she couldn’t sleep well. She was constantly thinking about the day when she’ll have no place to go, once again in her life.
Kate started racing as a professional jockey and soon she was becoming very successful. By the end of May, she has earned enough money to buy one of the empty lots in Monte Vista and think about building a new home. She was going to do it anyway one day, but now she finally had the reason to do it.
The first day of June, she went to the town hall to talk with the mayor of Monte Vista about the available lots for sale.
Unfortunately, there were only three lots which met Kate’s conditions. She didn’t want to risk anything and went to give a look at them right away.
Kate hasn’t bought a car yet, so she had to call a taxi.
This time, she finally got a new taxi driver.
The first lot was quite close to the center of the town, but the hilly landscape of Monte Vista made look everything so distant.
When they arrived at the lot at 57 Globe Street, Kate told the driver to wait for her.
She got out of the car to see it better. It looked bigger than she thought, so naturally, she was quite happy about that.
There was a beautiful view of the Colosseum and the surroundings looked very quiet.
When she decided to get back to the car, she noticed it wasn’t there anymore!
What’s wrong with the taxi drivers here? Kate wondered to herself while she was dialing the number.
Fortunately, the taxi was parked behind the corner, so it arrived instantly.
“To the lot at 31 Verona Way, please!” said sharply Kate.
“Yes, madam,” answered the driver.
When they were almost there, Kate noticed an overturned garbage bin on the ground.
She looked around and saw the nightclub where she met David right behind the lot.
“You don’t need to stop here,” she said to the driver because she didn’t like the location of this lot. Although it was right next to the Petite Pony equestrian center, the image of the bin being constantly kicked down by some drunk individuals was a big minus.
“Just take me to 35 Verona Way.”
“As you wish, madam.”
They drove across the stone bridge…
… passed along the vintage bazaar…
… drove uphill…
… and the next moment they have arrived at the destination.
Am I dreaming? Kate asked herself when she got out of the car. She was standing on a vast, empty lot near a big park.
This cannot be possible, she thought to herself while she walked towards the edge of the lot.
When she was halfway there, she has suddenly stopped. The moon was rising!
Wow! Kate thought to herself and ran to watch the moon rise from the sea.
“This is so beautiful!” she said aloud. I definitely want this lot…
The next day in the morning, Kate visited the mayor’s office again.
She wanted to inform herself about the prices and payment conditions. She got to know that the first lot was §1.800, she didn’t ask for the price of the second one because she didn’t want to deal with overturned bins all her life. When she asked the price of the third lot, she wasn’t pleased. It was 14.700 simoleons!
“I know, I know…,” said the mayor. “You have to consider many things, Mrs. Loewe. It is in a beautiful location, it is one of the biggest lots in Monte Vista, it has an amazing view, there is a big park right next to it…,” he continued.
“Yes, of course, but I think that it’s really overpriced,” told him Kate.
“Take it or leave it. There is one other person seriously interested in this lot,” the mayor informed her.
“Very well then, I’ll give one more look and I’ll let you know today,” said Kate.
“Make the right decision, Mrs. Loewe,” he smiled at Kate and shook her hand.
“Have a nice day, Mr. Rossi!” said Kate and left his office.
To be completely sure about her choice, Kate went to give one more look also to the first lot she visited yesterday. It was a little smaller than the perfect one, but whole 12.900 simoleons cheaper!
As she looked around, she noticed something moving nearby one of the trees. Kate decided to go closer and find out what it was.
When she approached, she found out that it was a white bird! How cute, she thought to herself as she crouched down to caress it.
“Come on, jump on my arm,” Kate spoke to the bird who seemed to understand her.
The next moment it was sitting on her arm. She played with it a little and when she thought about taking it home with her, the bird flew away. Kate returned to the car.
When she arrived at her dream lot, it seemed even more beautiful than yesterday.
The view was simply like she has always imagined it. Kate didn’t hesitate and called the mayor.
“Mr. Rossi’s office, how can I help you?” said a female voice.
“Hello, this is Kate Loewe, I would like to speak with the mayor, please.”
“Just a moment, please.”
“Thank you,” said Kate.
“Hello?” said Mr. Rossi.
“Hi Mr. Rossi. This is Kate Loewe calling. I would like to buy the lot at 35 Verona Way.”
“I see you’ve made the right decision, Mrs. Loewe,” he smiled. “I can assure you, you will not regret it.”
“I think I won’t! It’s perfect!”
“I’m glad to hear that. So, Mrs. Loewe, you can come to my office the next Monday and we will go through the papers…”
“Great!” smiled Kate.
“Have a nice day, bye-bye!”
“Thank you, bye!” said Kate and hung up the phone.
“YES!!!” Kate screamed aloud. She went back to the pizzeria to have something for the lunch. Later that day, Kate decided to go running.
Then she saw someone running on the same path as she was.
When she got closer, she recognized him. It was David. Kate decided to follow him.
“Hey, David! Is it you?”
“Hey, Kate! What are you doing here?” he asked her.
“Don’t you think that I should be the one asking this question?” Kate asked him sharply.
“I guess… Look… I didn’t want it to end this way…”
“What do you mean? If you never wanted to see me again, you had to tell me!”
“No, wait, you don’t understand,” he said.
“I think it’s pretty clear…,” told him Kate.
“You came here, confused my mind and disappeared… While you were gone you’ve also managed to break my heart. What is it that I don’t understand?”
“It wasn’t easy… Please, let me explain everything to you, Kate.”
“Very well, but just because I still love you,” she blushed.
“I have never stopped loving you...”
“Neither have I,” said David and wanted to kiss her full lips. “Listen, Kate. When I got on the plane, I realized, that I forgot to ask your number… I felt really bad about it…”
“You did?” asked happily Kate.
“Yeah… All the time I have been thinking about you… and me… about us.”
“Did my letter get to you? And the Christmas card?”
“You have sent a letter to me? When?” wondered David.
“I sent it for the St. Valentine’s day… but you have never written back…,” said Kate sadly.
“I didn’t get anything, I’m sorry Kate… I hope you know that if I had your address I would do the same thing you did… By the way, how did you get my address?”
“I asked the guy that rented the house to you while you were here with your friend Jayden…,” smiled Kate.
“Are you some kind of a secret agent?” laughed David.
“No, no… Just a desperate girl in love.”
David smiled at her. “Look, Kate, I probably know why your letters never got to me… It’s Jayden. I think he has taken them from the mailbox before I had the chance to check it. In the last months, he was quite jealous of me because I have been offered more job contracts than him… And seeing your best friend climbing high while you stay below must be quite difficult. Plus he’s never experienced true love… I think when he understood that I was still thinking about you, talking about moving to Monte Vista, he got even more jealous…,” explained David.
“Oh, I am sorry about Jayden, but it is not fair stealing something that doesn’t belong to you and secretly hiding it!”
“Absolutely not. That’s why I will never call him a friend again. Friends don’t do such things!”
“So, why have you come back to Monte Vista now? And why didn’t you stop by the pizzeria… You know I live there,” wondered Kate.
“Well, I guess it’s hard to believe, but I really didn’t have the chance to come back earlier. I spent five months in France constantly working and then another four in China.”
“Wow! What were you doing in China?” Kate was amazed because she’s never gotten the chance to travel the world.
“Well, I worked,” smiled David.
“Yeah, but except that? Have you visited the Great Wall? Have you seen the Terracotta army?”
“Well, yeah… I have done some sightseeing…”
“That’s awesome! If only I could have been there with you!”
“Well, now you are with me. We’re not exactly in China, but I think this town is just fine,” David smiled at Kate.
“And…,” Kate wanted to ask him some more questions about his trip to China, but then she realized she doesn’t even know what he’s doing at the lighthouse in his gym outfit. “Just a second, you still haven’t told me yet what you are doing here.”
“Oh, right… Well, I have just arrived…,” said David.
“It still doesn’t answer my question,” insisted Kate.
“I am moving to Monte Vista, Kate. The moment I got back from China I decided to quit my job. I packed few things and got on the first plane.”
“Are you kidding me?”
“No. I wanted it to be a surprise, but then I realized that maybe you’ve already found someone else, so that’s why I didn’t come to see you…”
“And you think that I believe that?”
“Well, I hope you do. I was thinking about buying a house here, but then I thought that maybe you would like to choose it together with me or build our own house on an empty lot… so this morning I went to the town hall to ask if there is some cool lot around, you know, with some really beautiful view, but the mayor told me that one like that has just been sold. So I have no surprise for you…”
“Well, in this case, I think I have one for you, David!” smiled Kate.
“Really? How can you have a surprise for me if you couldn’t have possibly known we would meet again?”
“I bought that lot, David!”
“What? You did?!?! You’re joking, aren’t you?”
“No, I am not. The next Monday it will be official.”
“No way,” David was surprised. “But it is too expensive for you, why would you want to buy something that big?”
“Well, I was planning on building a really big house… plus I love the nature, the trees, the plants, and flowers…,” said Kate.
“You’ve got a point.”
“And I would like to have horses… one day…”
“That’s amazing! I think you definitely should!”
“I am so happy, David. It’s really nice to have you back.”
“I am really happy too. So… you are not seeing anyone?”
“No, I am all yours!”
“Wow, I cannot believe it!”
“So, now, that you are finally back, would you like to come over?” asked him Kate hoping he would say yes.
“That would be great!” agreed David.
“Splendid,” said happily Kate.
That night was the first night Kate spent together with David. When she was still living in Appaloosa Plains, she met some nice guys, but it was different with David. Maybe he was different than most of Kate’s ex-boyfriends. She has never felt so much in love ever before…
