Chloe was relaxing in her room located on the ground floor of the Preston Dormitory when her cell phone beeped. She rolled over to the other side of the bed and reached for her phone lying on the carpet below. Chloe pressed the tiny button on the right side of the phone and the screen turned on. She drew the unlock pattern with her thumb and saw she got a new text message.
Chloe smiled to herself when she saw it was from Samuel Carter. She tapped on his name to read the message.
Looks like Jade’s expectations weren’t met, Chloe thought to herself. Stood up from the bed and walked to the window. She saw Samuel Carter standing alone in front of the gym and staring at the screen of his cellphone.
The moment Sam received Chloe’s last text, he looked around himself, searching for her. After less than ten seconds, he sent the most predictable question.
After Samuel sent the last text, he shoved his phone in the pocket of his jacket and swiftly walked towards the Preston Dormitory. Chloe ran to her door and turned the key. The approaching friend made her feel anxious like when a killer is about to attack his victim. It was really a horrible feeling. When Sam grabbed the handle of the door, Chloe literally jumped in fright.
“Don’t do this to me, Sam!” she called at him from behind the locked door.
“Did you really lock yourself in?” he asked, laughing.
“When I saw you approaching I suddenly got a panic attack,” Chloe explained to him and turned the key. “Sorry,” she said when she opened the door and let her friend in.
“Your room looks really cozy. Did you take all these?” Sam asked her, pointing at the photos above Chloe’s bed.
“Yeah. My dad is a photographer. I used to steal his Polaroid when I was a kid.”
“You’ve got talent, Chloe. I think you’re at the wrong academy, though,” he said, amazed by the photographs.
“Nah. I like Dribbledine. Plus all these photos are rather just experiments gone wrong,” she admitted. Sam’s stomach growled. “What was that?”
“My stomach. I’m really hungry.”
“Fine, let me just change the dirty shorts,” she told him, but Samuel kept looking at her. “Would you mind turning around?” she asked him politely.
“It’s not that I’ve never seen you in the swimsuit before, but if you really insist,” he teased her and turned around. Chloe threw the dirty shorts on the floor and picked a pair of jeans from her tiny wardrobe.
“Okay, I’m done.”
“Cool. Let’s bounce.”
Samuel and Chloe headed to the DSA’s parking lot where Sam’s car was parked. As they approached closer, they noticed Jade standing by the car, waiting. The moment she spotted them, Chloe’s cell phone rang. She looked at the screen. It was Benjamin.
“I’m sorry guys, but I have to take this,” Chloe said apologetically and answered the call. “Hey, dad. I was wondering when you’d call,” she sighed heavily and distanced herself from her friends. She knew this was going to be long.
“Hey, Chloe! Are you coming?” Samuel called at her from the other side of the parking lot. Chloe just made a sign with her hand.
“Looks like it’s just the two of us now. Again,” he sighed and got in the car. Jade jumped in the front seat and her heart nearly melted when she saw a little pink plushy ball with eyes hanging on the rear-view mirror.
“Don’t ask,” told her Samuel.
“It’s so cute!” Jade squealed excitedly. Samuel rolled his eyes and started the engine. This is gonna be fun, he thought to himself.
“I’ll text Chloe to meet us later, okay?” Jade smiled at Sam.
“Wait!” Chloe suddenly jumped in front of the car. “I’m coming with you!” she shouted. “My dad is here and he’s most probably going to kill me!!!”
“Why would he want to kill you?” asked her Sam when Chloe got in the car.
“What is he doing here? What did you do?” Jade demanded to know.
“Guys… I… Mrs. Adams… I mean… Mrs. Feeney… I…,” Chloe stammered.
“What?!” the two asked with one voice. Chloe looked at Jade, at Sam, at Jade again and took a deep breath. “So? Tell us already!”
“I’m… I’m so dead guys…”
“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?!”
“I’m pregnant!” Chloe shouted out and quickly placed her hand on the mouth, checking if someone else didn’t hear her.
“Holy shit! For real?” Sam couldn’t believe what he just heard.
“My dad is furious!” Chloe panicked.
“Oh. My. God,” said Jade and her jaw dropped down. “How did it happen?”
“How did it happen?” Sam repeated Jade’s childish question, laughing like crazy. “Haven’t your parents ever told you how babies are made?” he asked her, tears of amusement flooding his blue eyes.
“You’re so funny, Samuel. It really amazes me,” told him Jade, twisted her lips and shook her head.
“Fine, fine… I’m sorry. It was a stupid joke,” he apologized. “So, I’m not really into details from Chloe’s sexual life, what interests me more is how did hobgoblin get to know it,” Sam indirectly asked Chloe.
“Mrs. Feeney found the positive pregnancy test when she was cleaning my room. I wasn’t thinking when I threw it under the bed…”
“I had no idea the cleaning lady was doing her job so well. Once I saw her clean a mirror in the girls’ room. It was dirtier than before,” pondered Jade.
“I don’t think she’s ever cleaned under my bed,” admitted Sam and pushed the gas pedal. “What if she’s hobgoblin’s spy?”
“A spy?” Chloe exclaimed in surprise. “Why would anybody want to spy on us?”
“Not just anybody. We’re talking about Portia Adams here,” told her Jade.
“Fine, we all know that our history teacher is a case of its own, but why would she spy on the students?”
“Maybe she spies for Goodwell, Chloe. Maybe Mrs. Feeney is just one soldier of her army.”
“Oh, come on now, Sam! This is ridiculous!”
“Then how do you explain the disappearance of Liam’s cellphone last year?” Sam asked his friend and looked at her reflection in the rear-view mirror.
“I don’t know. Maybe he lost it… It wouldn’t surprise me in his case. He always looked so… lost.”
“And the fact that he got expelled from Dribbledine only a couple of days later is a pure coincidence, right?” Sam continued.
“Well… I didn’t really know him so I don’t feel the right to make any kind of conclusions,” said Chloe and suddenly got the feeling that Samuel might be right.
“Didn’t the police then finally catch the mysterious pusher who was selling cannabis and other illegal drugs to the students of the Stary Community School and the DSA?” Jade asked Sam when the car stopped in front of their destination.
“Exactly. And some of the bigger fish as well,” confirmed Sam.
“Wait… are we talking about the famous Red Herring case here?” Chloe asked her friends.
“Yes, but I would rather change the argument,” told her Sam and pointed at Victoria Preston and her best friend Tiffany Drake who just walked out of the coffeehouse. The moment Chloe, Jade, and Sam got out of the car, Victoria whispered something to Tiffany and both of them giggled.
“You can do better, Sam,” Victoria sneered at him as the two girls walked past them.
“If I wanted a bitch, I’d have bought a dog,” Sam quickly retorted. Victoria opened her mouth to make a suitably cutting retort, but nothing clever enough came on her mind. Jade and Chloe burst into laughter as Victoria and Tiffany briskly walked away, the scent of humiliation quickly spreading in the air.
“I couldn’t have said it better,” Chloe punched Sam’s shoulder in a friendly way while Jade was too amazed by what just happened that she couldn’t bring herself to say anything. Samuel Carter just secured the first place of her imaginary scale of the perfect boyfriends for the years to come, or at least until the graduation day.
FUN FACT: Chloe’s room is another of my fan builds. It was inspired by the room of Max Caulfield from the original game Life is Strange. Has anyone who plays this game noticed?
