“Excuse me, girls. Do you know where I could find Chloe Thomas?” Benjamin asked Victoria and Tiffany who were sitting on the stairs in front of the academy and gossiping about Samuel Carter and his two ‘girlfriends’.

“Why? Is she in trouble?” Victoria asked Ben with a cheeky tone and popped her bubblegum.

“I don’t think that’s any of your business, missy,” he said and looked around. Unfortunately, the two girls were the only ones at the campus. “Where’s everybody?”

“Not here,” Victoria said and looked at Tiffany. “Obviously,” she added mockingly.

“I’m Chloe’s father and I really need to talk to her. Could you, please, tell me where I could find my daughter?” Benjamin asked politely this time because he was running out of patience. Tiffany and Victoria exchanged amused looks.

“We’ve seen her downtown with Samuel Carter and Jade Greenwood,” Tiffany finally told him.

“They were headed to the Busy Bean,” added Victoria and looked at her watch. “I’m pretty sure they’re still there… lovebirds,” she jeered.

“I’m sorry, but did you say lovebirds?” Benjamin inquired.

“Looks like one girl isn’t enough for our local Casanova,” Victoria scoffed. Benjamin learned enough information. He thanked the girls, clenched his teeth and headed downtown in search of the coffeehouse.

“Coffee?” a friendly waiter asked Sam. He was the only one of the three who drank plain black coffee at the end of the meal.

“Thanks,” he smiled at the girl. “Are you new here? I’ve never seen you here before.”

“No, but I don’t usually work here,” she smiled back at the handsome customer. “Mackenzie Johnson, nice to meet you,” the girl held out her hand.

“Samuel Carter,” said Sam and the two shook their hands. Jade narrowed her eyes and scanned the waiter from head to toe.

“Wait, are you Chris’ sister?” Chloe asked the waiter. Mackenzie nodded her head.

“Chris had to be here today but he has something very important tonight,” Chris’ sister told them, putting a strong emphasis on the word very. Jade chuckled.

“Seriously, my brother never takes a day off so this Valentine’s date is gonna be something really big,” she added and searched for a piece of paper in the pocket of her apron. Chloe looked at Jade who didn’t seem very comfortable with what Mackenzie just said. “Here, you can write down your name and I’ll tell Chris to call you. I have a poor memory for names.”

“I’m Sam,” Samuel said jokingly.

“I know,” Mackenzie blushed.

“No, it’s okay. I was just wondering why he wasn’t here,” Chloe said casually and handed the piece of paper back to her.

“Oh, okay,” Mackenzie smiled at Chloe.

The very same moment the bell above the door announced the arrival of a new customer. Sam turned his head to look at the person who with such anger smashed the door behind himself as he walked in the coffee shop.

“Good afternoon,” Mackenzie smiled at the upset-looking man on her way to the counter. Sam immediately recognized Chloe’s father from one picture he saw earlier in her bedroom.

“Hey, Chloe. Isn’t that your dad?” he whispered to Chloe as he leaned towards her. When Chloe looked towards the door, her eyes met with her fathers’.

Shit… Chloe thought to herself.

“Chloe!” Benjamin called at his daughter and walked towards their table.

“I think it’s better if I leave,” Chloe said to her friends and briskly stood up from the table. Jade and Sam exchanged worried looks, but there was no way they could help their friend.

“Enjoy yourself tonight, J,” Chloe smiled at Jade and threw some coins on the table.

“Yeah, we’ll see about that. Good luck.”

“How did you find me here?” Chloe asked her father.

“I asked around the campus,” said Benjamin. “By the way, it’s good to see you, too,” he added.

“Yeah,” Chloe sneered at his sarcastic remark.

“You have lots to explain, sweetheart.”

“Could we please not talk about it… here?”

“Do you know someplace where we can be alone?” Ben asked her and looked at Samuel and Jade sitting at the table only a few steps away.

“Maybe,” Chloe sighed and walked towards the exit. Benjamin looked one more time at Sam and then followed his daughter outside.

“He didn’t seem too furious,” Sam told Jade. “I thought he would start yelling at her instantly.”

“The fact that nobody knows him in this town doesn’t automatically allow him to make a hysterical scene in front of us,” said Jade.

Then she suddenly placed her hand on Samuel’s leg. “I’m sorry for before. I behaved like a total jerk at the pool. Can you please forgive me?” she looked at him with doe eyes.

“Only if you promise you’ll have fun tonight,” Sam told her with an impish look and crossed his arms behind his head. “So, who’s the lucky man?”

“Chris,” Jade said after a moment of hesitation.

“Johnson? The waiter?” he asked in amazement.

“Yes,” she nodded her head while Sam broadly smiled at the incoming waiter.

“More coffee?” Mackenzie asked him with her sweet voice.

“No, thank you. I’ll be going.”

“Already?” Jade and Mackenzie said with one voice.

“Yeah,” Samuel grinned. The fact that both girls cared so much about his presence really entertained him. “I need to take care of something,” he said casually and took out his wallet from the back pocket of his jeans. “Can I have the check, please?”

“Sure. Come to the cash register,” Mackenzie said with a smile.

“Bye, Jade. Don’t forget to keep your promise,” Sam winked at her and followed Mackenzie to the cash register.

“Twenty-one fifty,” the waitress said to Sam.

“Twenty-five,” he smiled at Mackenzie as he handed a fifty-simoleon banknote to her.

“Thanks,” she blushed and gave him the rest. Then she quickly took a pen from the metal pen holder by the cash register and wrote down her phone number. “I’m free tonight,” Mackenzie winked at Sam as she handed the piece of paper to him.

Sam looked at her number and smiled to himself. “Bye Mackenzie,” he said and walked out the door.
